Pressed for time Heather M - News Reporter
As media continues to shrink the world, the need for quality reporters increases. This demand means potential reporters and broadcasters need to begin training in high schools, fine tune these skills in college, and apply this learning to a job.
Fortunately, Ashley High School has reconized this need, creating a daily web page to prepare in the world of journalism and educate a community on daily campus happenings.
"Ashley is a large high school," said Mr. Jim Klingensmith, The Swoop's advisor. "We want to represent everyone on this campus, and right now we are under staff to do so."
The cause of the shortage is caused by the enthusiasm of the current staff. They have taken ideas and implemented them, only to discover a lack of human resources. To fully accomplish the staff's vision, help is required.
"We need students with various talents; people familiar with technology, strong writing skills, and creativity," added klingensmith. "Plus, being interested in publicationa is also helpful."
The swoop gives students an opportunity to improve their skills as they wish to further educate themselfs in journalism, technology, and creativity. Plus, unlike a school newspaper, students get instant feedback since everyday a new deadline must be met.
"Basically we serve as the public relations occice for the school," remarked Klingensmith. "We try to get out daily information to let everyone in the community know what's going on."
The types of information found on the web page consist of school events, entertainment events, sports scores and write ups, commentary, announcements, calendar, and other tidbits of information.
Students must apply for this class and they may pick up an application in room 309. The application helps the staff get to know the student and determine their talents in order to fill hole on the staf.
"The application is just a way for us to get to know the students before we interview them and they can be picked up in room 309," quoted Klingensmith. "After the application has been completed we will have the students come in and interview with the editors and myself."
With students filling out schedules in the next few weeks, timeis an issue.
"If students are interested, they may put the class down on their schedule," Klingensmith marked in closing. "In the mean time, they need to notify us of this interest because the number of spaces in the class is limited due to the amount of technology availible."

Red Flagged Teacher enlightens on history of confederate flag By: Heather M News Reporter
Controversy may be expressed in a variety of ways. Individuals are capable of showing this behavior through use of words, actions, and expressions--even symbols. At AHS recently, controversy reared its head through the symbol of a Confederate flag.
One particular student at Ashley High School of late started a petition to fly what he believes to be the original flag of the Confederacy, This student thinks the flag is meaningful and rightfully deserves its place at facilities in the south.
"I grew up in reference to the Confederate flag here in the south," commented Jacob Dean. "It's a part of me, and I don't care what other people think. If people do have a problem with the flag, that's their problem."
With Dean's viewpoint, the flag represents southern pride. However, some AHS students took offence. Many cited the Confederacy no longer exists. Others view the flag as an object "with no ethical purposees at all."
"First of all, it's not legal to fly the confederate flag on a public building, so even if they wanted to they couldn't," stated Mr. Albert Zay, history department. " I would hope that people would realize that the flag is a symbol of hatred, and wouldn't want to fly the rebel flag."
Since this even occured, the administrators had to tackle the situation. The best way for them to do so was educate themselves on the subject. One administrator, Sam Highsmith, went as far to even read a book on the subject.
"I know more then the obvious thoughts after reading about the subject," stated Highsmith. "It is important to know the truth, instead of what people would assume on the confederate flag."
Highsmiths recent education on the subject echoes similar statements made by Zay. Zay emphasized that the original Confederate flag is not the one we reconize on a day-to-day basis, for many people believe that the rebel flag is the original flag of the Confederacy.
"Even I was told the rebel flag was the original confederate flag," stated Zay. "The rebel flag has been put in history books andvideos you see in schools. So basically teachers have lied unknowingly."
The first flag of the confederacy was made of stars and bars. Holding seven stars in a circle and three stripes which two are red, and one white. The seven stars represented the seven original confederate states, which were South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and texas. This flag was used from March 1861 to May 1863. Furthermore, the design was changed on three different occasions.
"The final design that was used as a Navy Jack at sea is generally reconized easily," Zay remarked in closing. "The flag showed up again when the KKK used this flag as a symbol. The flag was also used in the movie *Gone with the Wind*. In additionthe Confederate flag was used in the Brown Vs. the Board of Education to protest wanted segregation."

What would someone do if they were being sexually harassed?
Well, for one thing, the individual must know what sexual harassment is. Sexual harassment is being talked to or touched in a way that is unacceptable.
In most cases, the person who is commiting the harassment does not realize that they are bothering the individual, chances are they know they have some type of power over them mentally that is making them feel uncomfortable. If someone is being sexually harassed, they must know that it's not their fault, and they shouldn't have to tolerate being treated in a manner where they feel unsafe, and insecure.
If someone is being sexually harassed, or if the individual knows somebody who is being harassed, they don't have to tolerate it. All they have to do is tell an administrator, deputy, or some other authority figure. These people will take action from there, for every individual has the right to feel safe in school, at home, or anywhere for that matter.
It is important for everyone to know his or her rights as an individual and a human being. Don't ever hesitate to take action or notify authorities. Otherwise, that person may try to take it a step further, even though any action they take that is uncalled for is too far!
